BOOK STUDY OFFERED FOR FALL
A new adult education opportunity will be offered
for all FCC members and friends starting in late September. We will be studying the book The Phoenix
Affirmations, by Eric Elnes. This is
a book of affirmations/belief statements for those of us in moderate to liberal
Christian churches. Using biblical
insights and Christian church experience, the study will focus on two of the
affirmations each week. Dr. Rich Wolf will be our
leader. The media, our friends and
relatives, and culture remind us of what more conservative evangelicals and
fundamentalists believe: taking the
words of the Bible literally; God offers salvation to born-again Christians
only; and God tells us which political candidates to support, among other
things. Our sisters and brothers of the “religious
right” will also be happy to tell us what God thinks about any so-called
“family values” issues, from homosexuality to creationism.
The
Phoenix Affirmations, in short, state that being a Christian includes: Affirming diversity of paths to God;
Practicing the disciplines of the Spirit; Caring for the Environment;
Worshipping authentically; Embracing diverse individuals and groups; Being
advocates for the oppressed; Keeping church and state separate; Calling forth
the best in others and ourselves; Affirming we are loved, valued, and accepted;
Declaring the value of both science and religion; Caring for our bodies, minds,
and spirits; and Choosing a vocation for life.
Books
are available in local bookstores, and once we know the number of participants,
you may also order copies through the church. The study is open to any number
of people, and the classes will be on Saturday
mornings from 9:00 – 10:30am at church on September 27, October 4, 18,
25, November 1, 8. Please sign up to
join us via the bulletin board in the church office, or by calling or emailing
the church office to sign you up.
Questions? Call or email Rich
Wolf at church.
THE CHARITY KNITTING HAS BEGUN!
At the organizational meeting Friday, September 19th, it was decided that we would have monthly meetings. Our first meeting will be on October 20th, 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the drawing room in the church. This gives you a choice of afternoon or evening. We are going to concentrate on three things. Blankets for babies, Teddy Bears and chemo caps. All skill levels are welcome and we have people that will help beginning knitters or crocheters. Stop by the church office to get patterns or call 708-352-0800. All of our finished projects will be given to Ronald McDonald House and they have a few rules that apply to this project. The yarn should be very soft such as Caron Simply Soft or Bernat Softee Baby, available at Wal-Mart or JoAnne Fabrics and Crafts. No wool in any of the projects. 30" to 36" makes a nice size for a baby blanket. Feel free to use your favorite patterns and yarns. Same with the Teddy Bears. All projects should be machine washed and dried before turning in. Please - no fabric softener. Can you come up with a good name for the group? Turn in your suggestions to the office and we will vote at the first meeting. The winner will get a skein of yarn.

Saturday Lunch Program
Have you wanted to get involved with our highly successful lunch program but didn't know how to go about it? Here are some suggestions on how you can help:
Funds: We gratefully accept donations of any amount.
Time: We appreciate any time you can give us on a Saturday, whether it is making lunches, serving food or assisting the clean-up crew.
Food: Donations of homemade desserts such as cookies, brownies, etc. are always appreciated by our guests. Also, donating a hot lunch for about 40-50 people would be greatly welcomed.
Laundry: We use a lot of towels, aprons and tablecloths while serving our guests. Washing these linens and having them back in the kitchen by the following Saturday would be a great help.
Anyone with questions or willing to sign up for one of these tasks should call Bill Bright at 246-4018 or eamil him at billybright@hotmail.com. Thank you for all your support! We couldn't do it without you.
MORNING BOOK CIRCLE Our next meeting will be in the Drawing Room at 10:00 a.m. on the fourth Thursday, October 23rd. The book to read is Song Yet Sung, by James McBride. This is a gripping pre-Civil War adventure based on historical facts of a runaway slave and her experiences with the underground railway. Our meetings are always open to everyone, so feel free to join us on that day!
